Yes, you CAN go to College!

By Annette Bridges If many new graduates are like my niece, they are wondering how to come up with money for college. I remember when I was a high school grad wondering the same thing, some thirty years ago. I never thought about not going to college. But it wasn’t obvious how I was going to afford it. Even with loans, grants and work, it still appeared I would be short what would be required. With my mom’s help, I had enough money for the first semester, but would I be able to pay for the next? Jesus might answer, “No chance at all if you think you can pull it off by yourself. Every chance in the world if you trust God to do it.” My mom and I had witnessed the truth of those words many times. She and my dad divorced when I was ten years old. With no formal education or work experience, she managed to build a new life for both of us. She firmly trusted in God to provide whatever we needed. And along the way, she made a believer out of her daughter me. Prayer to God had always brought solutions in the past, even in financial matters. Why should I doubt now? Could I believe there might be a situation or condition when God had no control where God was powerless? The healings and teachings of Jesus recorded in the Bible had been a source of guidance to me all my childhood, and they still are. I read again about a man who was waiting at a pool called Bethesda. It was believed that, at a certain time, the water there was stirred by an angel. Tradition said that whoever got into the water right after the angel had visited the pool would be healed. A crippled man had been waiting 38 years probably most of his life to enter the pool. But each year, he missed the perfect moment and others got to the water first. Still, he didn’t give up. And his hope was finally realized through Jesus. His healing came but in an unexpected way. This account, in John’s Gospel, gave me a new perspective on my worries about college expenses. Was I limiting my options? The man at Bethesda had thought the only way he could be healed was if he got into the pool at exactly the right time. Yet that wasn’t the “only way.” When Jesus redirected his faith from a pool of water to the Christ-power that uplifts and heals, the man found the freedom he had longed for. Where was my faith, I asked myself? Was it tied only to loans and grants? To finding ample employment? Getting a scholarship? What were my options? Did I face an uncertain future? What I learned from thinking about Jesus’ encounter with the man at the pool of Bethesda was that God is continuously sending me and everyone infinite possibilities. I needed to open my thought to them. Not define or limit the ways my needs could be met. I could replace fear and uncertainty with the knowledge that God was governing my life. Affirm that God makes all things possible. Including a college education! So I headed off to college on what some would call a leap of faith. But it was more like a confident and expectant trust that solutions would come, even though I couldn’t see them immediately. I focused on one semester at a time and worried less about the future. As it turned out, it was semester by semester prayer that led the way to my college degree. And expenses were paid each semester in countless sometimes unexpected ways. One unexpected solution came in the form of a note in my school mailbox. An anonymous donor had paid the remainder of my tuition that year. There were many loans, grants, scholarships and awards. Plus a variety of jobs some of which gave me valuable experience that served me well in future endeavors. My college years strengthened my trust in God, divine Love, who truly does meet every need. And I know this is true for my niece and other college-bound grads. Everyone. Maybe we just need to remind ourselves His ways are infinite and sometimes quite unexpected. An Obstacle Course for a Child Physical Activity

By Nancy Johnson Setting up an obstacle course is a wonderful child physical activity. Children get lots of exercise while having fun. An obstacle course can be set up with items you may already have. Usually an obstacle course is set up outdoors, but can be a wonderful indoor activity when the weather is bad. To set up an obstacle course, think of terms such as jump, hop, crawl under, climb over, walk along, go right or go left. A child physical activity includes practicing gross motor skills, balance and coordination. Plan out the course by listing the skills you want the children to practice. Eight to ten stations is a good number for school age children. Use a ladder flat on the ground to run through Crawl under a table or broom hung between 2 chairs Hop through hula hoops set on the ground Step over an obstacle such as yardstick between 2 chairs at knee height Walk across balance beam (4×4 board) Weave in and out of poles made with PVC pipe inserted in sand buckets Squeeze through 2 objects placed close so child walks sideways Throw ball into wastebasket Carry an object on a spoon (water balloon outdoors, small ball indoors) Jump or skip 5 times with jump rope Bounce or dribble ball to next station (at least 5 times) You can adjust this child physical activity to fit the ages, abilities and number of children in your group. Make the obstacle course simple at first and gradually increase the difficulty of each station. If you want, time the kids to see how fast they can complete the course. Record their individual times and see if they can practice to improve their own times. Make certificates of accomplishment and completion of this child physical activity; the obstacle course. Lead With Strength - Operating Within Skill Set Is Key To Success

By November Dawn My former boss would stick out his chest out exclaiming, We must lead from strength! It was not until I became a consultant that I grasped the meaning of this powerful phrase. Businesses must recognize their strengths and market them fervently. Agility might be necessary in this ever-changing marketplace, but businesses especially small businesses that attempt to be everything to everyone inevitably fail. Internally, business owners who don too many hats are certain to become overwhelmed. They overlook important tasks and attempt to tackle duties outside of their areas of expertise. This is most apparent in marketing and administration. Easy access to word processing, desktop publishing and web design software lulls business owners into a false sense of ability. They assume their ability to use the software translates to the talent needed to create professional materials that produce results. Rudimentary ability should never be a substitute for expertise. Many professionals boast of their writing skills. Without a comprehensive knowledge of the theory and mechanics of writing, these professionals produce pieces riddled with embarrassing errors. Press releases go to the media with improper formatting and full of advertorial copy. Just as sure as you can say, spam, editors trash these press releases almost as quickly as they arrive. All too often, eager business owners create postcards in a generic desktop publisher program. They throw in a barrage of cartoon clipart without giving pause to what colors detract from sales. They mail them out to prospective clients and wait in vain for the calls to pour in. They never do at least not at a rate to keep the business alive. Score one for big businesses who know better. I cannot afford a copywriter or graphic designer, is what small business owners say. Most business experts agree that 20% of a budget should go into marketing. Still, marketing seems to be an afterthought to the average small business owner. They believe customers will overlook their lackluster or non-existent marketing materials and ignore the excellent pieces of their wiser competitors. They believe that their clients usually other businesses will understand their plight when piece mill direct mail inches across their desk. They do not understand. I have seen many an executive mercilessly pick apart a competitors website, or direct mail piece. I have even chuckled over terribly written press releases. It is a shame. A business owners time is much better spent running and growing their business instead of doing something outside of their skill set. My recommendation to you great business leaders out there is to find your strength and lead with it. When it comes to writing, just leave that to professionals like me. Dawn S. Why Sleep On A Round Mattress?

By Thomas Jay Wacker A round mattress, like any other mattress, is just another way to get a good night sleep, isnt it? Or is a round mattress more? Is a round mattress in some way even better? The ancient Greek Philosopher Plato, might have said, Sleeping on a round mattress would be the ideal mattress. Certainly Buckminster Fuller, the inventor of the Geodesic Sphere would have preferred a round mattress to the conventional square. In fact, what better addition to a round house, than a round mattress? A square mattress just wouldnt fit in a round house. But why round? What makes the circle so much more important to a philosopher, or a scientist? In one word; space According to Plato, who was well versed in geometry, the sphere is the ideal structure of the universe. While Buckminster Fuller enjoyed the spheres philosophical nature, he preferred to see it practically. Between the sphere and the tetrahedron, it is the sphere that occupies the smallest surface area in total, while containing the largest internal area, than any other solid. While the opposite is true for the tetrahedron, the same concept is used in analyzing the area of the circle and triangle. Geometrically, ROUND is bigger on the inside, and smaller on the outside. Paradoxal, but true; even if two triangles are fit together to make a square; the circle still has more space inside it. To the sleeper, space is one of the most important characteristics of comfort, because it means having the freedom to move the body to its most preferred position, and still staying within the relaxing support zone of the bed. Space, is more than comfort, space is freedom. Not just freedom of movement for one single person, round mattresses, can be made to accommodate, couples as well. The comfort zone however, for some, can be different, than for others. One of the nicest features of the round mattress is its adaptability to individual needs. As there is a larger inner special area than in the conventional square or rectangular mattresses, the circle allows customized split mattresses to be far roomier than traditional split mattresses. So that if of the two people sleeping in the bed, one needs a totally different kind of mattress than the other, a split round mattress can provide the ideal mattress sleep requirements for both. If a sleeper is to feel relaxed on a mattress, it is important that the mattress is one which abides to their sense of aesthetics. Many people prefer round mattresses, merely because of their aesthetic nature. Round mattresses just seem to be more pleasing to the human eye. To this, Plato would most agree. As the circle invoked in him such a spiritual side, that just isnt the case with most people. Most people just think it is a nice looking mattress, something different, something unique, to give life a little bit of taste. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so no really logical conclusion can be made as to why people seem to think a round mattress is aesthetic, the important thing is that the person feels better sleeping on it rather than a traditional one, the point is relaxation. A round mattress is more spacious and offers more freedom of movement. Due to its unique design, its round nature, it becomes far more adaptable to individual needs as soft as a cloud to as firm as a mountain. You will feel like you are floating on the surface of a timid blue lake. You will relax. About the author: Thomas Jay Wacker is the General Manager and V.P. of http://www.simplepedic.com. Aluminum Fence Pricing

By Damian Sofsian Aluminum fences are priced according to their grade and style of manufacture. Fences for residential use are made of a lighter gauge and are thus priced lower than industrial grade fences. However, as residential fences are more ornamental that industrial fences, customers need to pay for designs and finishes. A 4′ gate for residential purposes can be purchased for a base price of around $185. Every increase of one foot in height will hike the price by approximately $15-$20. Arched gates of 4′ in height will cost approximately $325. The difference in price between an arched gate and a non arched gate is due to the craftsmanship and amount of material used in crafting the gate. The use of more ornaments on the gates could further hike up the price, depending on the choice of ornaments. The cost of ornaments ranges from $1.50 to $10.00 each. Exclusive ornaments are also available but are priced higher. If you are looking for a cost effective fence, you can buy separate panels and gate posts and assemble it yourself. Case panels start at $50.00 each and can go up to $90.00, depending upon size. Gate posts start at $25.00, and the price increases with size. Accessories like latches, hinges, and the like are sometimes offered free with a sizable purchase. These accessories are generally priced per piece and can be purchased as per requirement. Do it yourself enthusiasts find this feature very useful. Quality features like a minimum ultimate strength of 35,000 psi, assembly with stainless steel, corrosion resistant screws, and the like are likely to push up the price. But these features will make the fence worth the money spent on it. Attention to small details like screws or fastener heads painted to match the finish of the fence or fully powder-coated accessories also make a difference to the price. Some rails used in aluminum fences come with extra internal ribbing that increases the strength and rigidity of the fence panels. Is Your Husband or Wife Cheating? Five Great Reasons to Hire a Private Investigator!

By Bill Mitchell Discovering an affair in your relationship is indispensable, but thats just the beginning of what you will face. A family court ruling will be rendered either for or against you and your children. A judge will decide for you based on the EVIDENCE, who is the best custodial parent. If your state considers infidelity grounds for divorce, PROOF is essential! If you are party to a legal action, your observations, discoveries and testimony is already tainted with BIAS. This article will give you a few insights to consider. Ive identified 5 key reasons you SHOULD hire an investigator and in a few words examine the reasons why. 1. Time is of the essence. Depending on the length of an affair, your spouse may end it without ample opportunity for you to document it. On average affairs last six months to a year and then end without your knowledge. However, in some cases, your spouse will divorce you for the mistress. So waiting to prove your case may be too late. Dont let the opportunity escape you. 2. Satisfy your Need to Know. Over three decades my agencies have worked for countless clients who spanned the US. More than half of these clients had a need to know. Finding out the extent of an affair, the identity of the mistress/paramour is indispensable. If you feel a gripping urgency to gratify this need, recognize you share in the feelings with a vast number of others. 3. You should not witness the affair yourself. In one case a client insisted on witnessing her husband activities. I discouraged her. We placed him under surveillance for a nooner, a lunchtime rendezvous. It was a successful surveillance with an unexpected twist. The subject united with his mistress as we anticipated. They choose a remote parking area in front of a river bank on a dead end street. This was a favorite hangout for teenagers surrounded by woods and plenty of cover from public view. We shadowed them successfully. The hood of his vehicle served their desires and clandestine behavior. Roughly fifteen minutes passed and a female emerged from the nearby woods. She moved toward us. We were concerned she would blow our cover. To our shock it was our client! She was so compelled to witness the affair for herself that she walked through heavy woods and brush to do so. Auspiciously for us and her spouse, no confrontation ensued. Now if it werent so heartbreaking, the episode would be humorous. Her garb was utterly out of place. A full length white dress was the wrong attire for the woods. It seemed she never realized her mistake. Take my advice, please leave investigations to professionals. 4. Professional Testimony frequently prevails! Finding yourself seated in a courtroom with two opposing attorneys, court employees, is the wrong time to realize how unprepared you are for day. You will need testimony from others. Friends can offer some degree of support for your case. They may hold up under cross examination. If your witness list only includes family and friends, be prepared for a frightful revelation. Even though they are trustworthy try convincing a court system. You are fighting a losing battle. Their innate bias and testimony bear little weight in the final assessment. Are you confident your witnesses testimony will have credibility? Do they possess the experience you need? After all, you have one chance in most family courtrooms. What if your witness is caught in a lie? Youre finished! A judge will rule against you for bringing in someone who is not forthright. Court testimony is enormously helpful, it often decides legal cases. My testimony has always made a positive difference. If your investigator obtains evidence for your case, use it to your familys advantage. Your kids may just have to visit as an alternative to dwelling with you. 5. Your emotions could get you thrown in jail. Domestic investigations always bring concern for private investigative agencies. One notable case resulted in vehicular homicide. The client asked her hired PI for the rendezvous site. She arrived in a rage killing her spouse with the SUV. Clearly, when an investigation is warranted hire a professional and keep your distance. If you conduct your own surveillance, be prepared to defend yourself against a stalking charge. Keep your distance and your head! For additional information on contracting a PI discover how with my new paperback,”The More You Know Getting the evidence and support you need to investigate a troubled relationship.” I included an entire chapter on the topic. Lapel Pins - The Versatile Promotional Item and Collectable

By Christopher Luck Whether you are a big company or a small firm, corporate spirit is important. With a nice, well-made lapel pin, employees and executives alike will be able to show off the corporate logo in style. No logo? No problem, simply order a lapel pin that is simply the company name, a motto, or an unofficial slogan. You can also use a lapel pin to recognize members of prominent organizations. With a creative logo or message, a lapel pin will let those with whom you come in contact know what you do by identifying your allegiance. By having all of the members around wearing lapel pins, it increases the recognition, and at the same time, appreciation. Use lapel pins to give recognition and to reward special successes. A lapel pin can be a great way to recognize the achievement of a goal, or mark a long time service to your company. The lapel pin will be great for increasing the employees pride. You can also use the pins to participants or as prizes in a contest can really increase the memories associated with that event for your employees. You can also use them to reward volunteers to your organization, members of the board, or meeting fun raising goals. Maybe you need to figure out a gift for someone special. Why not a nice, hand made lapel pin. There are a lot of people out there who started colleting lapel pins as children. They end up remaining loyal to the hobby, though, because it remains a popular one even today. Many lapel pins are, literally, works of art that cost a great deal of money. In addition, some that are limited in availability go up in value with time. So for that lapel pin collector, have one made special or at least one that is in limited supply. That way, you do not have to spend too much, but can end up giving a valuable gift. Lapel pins are extremely versatile. They can be used effectively in business, churches, charity organizations, events, and even families. As a collectable, they are popular and varied which makes them fun. As a promotional item, you will find that they are affordable for your group or business. However, you will also find that the perceived value of a nice looking lapel pin is much higher than the literal cost. That makes it a fantastic promotional item and reward. So, for your next promotion, consider lapel pins for a good reaction from your people and your budget. Marketing for Real Estate - Why Do I Need To Use The Internet To Market My Real Estate Business?

By Connie Ragen Green We are now well into the new millennium. Marketing for small businesses has changed drastically over the past five to ten years. It is now necessary to market to both your current and potential clients through both online and offline means. The idea is to increase your visibility. There are tens of thousands of realtors across the country. Depending upon where you live there are most likely hundreds or thousands of realtors competing for business in your neighborhood. You must rise above the crowd so that clients can find out who you are and how you can help them solve their problem. The very best way to do this is to leverage the power of the internet in your real estate business. We live in a global economy. Someone who is planning on moving into your neighborhood, maybe even next door to you, may be presently living half way around the world. You know that you would be the best person to help them find the house that is available, negotiate the deal, complete the transaction, and help them get moved in. You also know that you could do this within the next six to eight weeks. But how will that person find you and figure out that you are the one who can best help them? Through the power of the Internet. Offline marketing is still useful. If you currently send out postcards when you have a new listing or make a sale I would encourage you to continue that practice. There are many people who like the idea of receiving something personal from you. But, tell the truth, do you personally write or even address those cards that are sent out? If they are prepared and sent out by a bulk mail facility you have lost the personal touch anyway. Direct mailings are also very expensive. If your company is helping to defray some of the costs it may fit within your marketing budget, but you may still want to look at reaching people through the Internet. The mailing cost there is still zero. Connie Ragen Green is a Real Estate Broker and State Certified Residential Appraiser in California and has bought and sold over 100 properties since 1983. Make Your Marketing Solve a Problem

By Wendy Maynard You may be engaged in a marketing activities that are working against you. Or, at the very least, are making sales more difficult. Its a common problem - marketing that focuses on what your company can DO and what your company KNOWS and how much experience you HAVE. Surprise! This doesnt work. Instead of focusing on YOU, market yourself as an innovative problem solver. Youll be pleasantly surprised at how easily this approach attracts new customers. Emphasize how your service or problem fixes their nagging issue, pain, or dilemma. It doesnt matter what you offer as long as you keep some basic principles in mind: 1. Self Interest: People (you and me included) want to know what is in it for them. They are interested in useful ideas, services, and products that make something better in their life. Dont talk about YOU. Start talking about THEM. 2. Comfort: People do business with people they know and trust. Start a conversation with people by giving them articles, newsletters, or other information that you have created to HELP them. This also allows them to learn more about the way you think and your capabilities 3. Generate Interest: Are you effectively communicating the one thing that makes you unique? What can you offer that no other business can? In one sentence, describe it. This is your Core Marketing Message. Use it over and over to generate interest and get people talking about you. 4. Communication: To have a good relationship, you have to stay in touch. Whether its family, friends, or leads, this principle is exactly the same. And when prospects are ready to buy, you want them to know YOU provide the best solution. Keep communicating through phone calls, e-mails, lunch dates, and so on. ACTION ITEM: Are you offering a solution to a problem? Are you communicating regularly? Do you know your core marketing message? If your current marketing materials don’t take this approach, rework them. With a focus on THEM, you will easily generate more sales and greater revenue! Trust: Why Do We Need It?

By Joy Cagil We place so much emphasis on trust! “I trusted him and he backstabbed me.” “She cannot be trusted.” Usually statements like these are uttered with very strong emotions. Then, from where does trust originate and why do we break each other’s trust? All our questions and observations on the matter make us realize the importance of trust, because the essential mechanism under all relationships must depend on trust. Solitary individuals do not need trust. Maybe a person may trust the night to be dark only because of its repeating pattern, but this type of trust is not reciprocal. The night doesn’t need to trust the individual; it is just there. Trust only happens between two or more self-aware people, groups of people and also nations or groups of nations. Gaining trust is a reward for responsible behavior and an indication of cooperation. It is said, “Trust is earned.” For trust to establish between people, recognition skills of behavioral patterns are needed. Trust goes hand in hand with cooperation and respect and is strengthened through the test of time. If it weren’t for respect and cooperation, how could we trust each other? In human endeavors, even the most altruistic actions and nurturing behavior stem from the ego of the doer. A mother nurtures her child because her ego is stroked by the title of being a mother and she wants to be proud of the work she will do with that child. In return, a child faced with repeated patterns of nurturing develops a capacity for trust. Only, when trust is betrayed, recognition of the broken pattern and the acceptance of a new pattern take place. That is why children who have been wronged repeatedly lack the capacity to trust. The same goes for adults. If an adult has been repeatedly wronged and taken for a ride, say in financial matters, he is very careful with his money even where his best friends are concerned. From our comfort zone, our human mind and understanding makes us construct a defense against betrayal and defection from the norm. Once our trust is broken we take our steps with heightened awareness. Unfortunately, developing a trust-relationship is the first step of various crimes. Gaining a victim’s trust, establishing credibility within an environment, and even creating a trustworthy environment can be the maneuverings of a perpetrator. Knowing this, why do we still trust so readily? The answer is again an egocentric one. We trust because without trust we could never get cooperation and reciprocity. We may not trust fully the way our towns work, yet we still put out our garbage on given days, try to keep our lawns and streets clean, and act our best in our own neighborhoods. In general, people who trust have better interpersonal relationships. People who don’t trust tend to be more angry, competitive, and resentful. A betrayal of trust is difficult for most people to forgive, but people who can trust are more likely to give someone else a second chance. Sometimes we may be annoyed by a new friend for being on the reserved side, but we have to understand that each individual is so complex and has so many experiences, feelings, needs, opinions, etc. that he can’t possibly reveal all sides of himself to a new acquaintance. So, he plays a role or at least shows only parts of his real self. Why does he hide parts of himself? Why do we all? Probably because of fear of rejection and our own sensitivity or vulnerability. From what we see of each other, we form a concept of each other, which is usually incomplete and sometimes faulty. If we can recognize this in ourselves, we can empathize with others and form trustworthy relationships. In general, most human interactions are based on a strong and almost blind trust. People who choose to trust tend to be happier, better liked by others, and more ethical than less trusting people. “I’ll trust them until they do me wrong” is a foundation for people who trust freely. When the stakes are raised higher, trust may be broken. Still, trusting people forgive readily as soon as they can understand the other person’s problems or what made them deviate from their normal pattern. Trusting is another form of giving love, and like all giving, it comes from overflow. A person can hardly give from emptiness. We are happier when we deliberately choose to trust. Trust is a risk to take willingly because it makes people move toward love and away from fear. For that reason alone, trust is a defense in itself.
